Updated:May 15, 2022

On the evening of April 22, 2022, three letters of commendation issued by British royal family member Prince Michael of Kent were sent all the way to China from London, England as prestigious rewards to the top three contestants of 2021 Grouphorse Cup National English Speaking Contest Final. This was certainly a royal stamp of approval.

Endorsed by the British Council, Cultural and Education Section of the British Embassy, and co-organized by the Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIOL) and Beijing Grouphorse Translations (a United Nations vendor for language services, hereinafter referred to as Grouphorse), the 2021 Grouphorse Cup National English Speaking Contest Final came to a successful conclusion on March 20, 2022.

For several years, Grouphorse has maintained friendly relations with key British leaders. This was reflected in the warm reception of Tang Xing, Chairman of Grouphorse, and his delegation by former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown. It was also demonstrated when George Osborne, then UK Chancellor of the Exchequer, wrote a letter to Mr. Tang expressing his gratitude for the language services provided by Grouphorse during the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors Meeting. To build strong avenues for Chinese-Western cultural communication, Grouphorse has remained committed to providing high quality language services for international exchange and cooperation.

At the closing ceremony, John Worne, Chief Executive of the Chartered Institute of Linguists, delivered a speech in which he expressed:

“It would be hard to think of two more important families of languages to learn, speak and master than the English family of languages and the Chinese family of languages. Chinese and English are spoken to a useful level by over 1.5 billion people. The best communication is always person to person, and every person who can speak another language adds to the sum of possibilities for the Chartered Institute of Linguists’ motto. Everyone competing today should be proud of themselves.”

The foreign judge of the contest final, Robin White, specialist at the British Council, Cultural and Education Section of the British Embassy, also strongly acknowledged the significance of the first Grouphorse Cup National English Speaking Contest. According to him, despite the complicated process and numerous technical problems involved in organizing online contests, this one was successful due to the careful preparation and unremitting efforts of the organizing committee, as well as the cooperation of each contestant and judge. The scoring rules were interpreted in detail before the final, ensuring a smooth grading process. The high English proficiency of the contestants certainly made a deep impression on Robin. After the contest, he once again expressed his utmost appreciation to the organizing committee, and sincerely congratulated the contestants on their brilliant performances!

After the contest, British royal family member Prince Michael of Kent issued letters of commendation as prestigious rewards to the top three contestants. This clearly demonstrates the contest’s significance. The contestants were also awarded a week-long, fully-funded research visit to London.

For thousands of students, the Grouphorse Cup is a great opportunity for skills refinement. In this contest, excellent participants from all over the world can showcase their talent through rhythmic cadence, clear and natural phrasing, and simple yet profound expression.

In terms of society, the Grouphorse Cup is an exciting chance for modern Chinese youngsters to keep up with the times, pay attention to social welfare, and promote Chinese wisdom.
