Project background
Since 2024, China has been issuing an intensive stream of policies related to ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance). Multiple ministries and commissions, including the People's Bank of China, the Ministry of Finance, the China Securities Regulatory Commission, and the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, have been actively promoting ESG development and will advance the in-depth practice of ESG concepts and information disclosure within their respective functional remits. ESG has become a critical issue concerning corporate long-term development and social value creation. The important policy document "Opinions on Comprehensively Advancing the Construction of a Beautiful China" proposes to "explore the implementation of ESG evaluations" as part of the initiative to "improve the guarantee system for building a Beautiful China." Additionally, the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission (SASAC) has successively issued multiple documents setting forth clear requirements for central state-owned enterprises regarding ESG work. ESG has now become a key lever for central state-owned enterprises to fulfill their social responsibilities to high standards and to drive high-quality economic and social development.
With the growing prevalence of ESG concepts and the increasing regulatory requirements for companies to disclose ESG information, a wide range of needs have emerged around disclosure, leading to a sharp surge in demand for ESG professionals. Over the next five years, China is expected to face an ESG talent gap of at least 2.27 million professionals (source: China ESG Research Institute, September 2023). Even Hong Kong's prestigious Quality Migrant Admission Scheme has included ESG talent on its "List of Talent Shortages"!
In order to put ESG concepts into practice, promote the professionalization of ESG, enhance the international knowledge structure and practical capabilities of ESG professionals, cultivate globally-minded ESG talent, and actively advance the social responsibility performance and sustainable development of Chinese enterprises, IAB London Chamber of Commerce and Industry LCCI (IAB LCCI) and the China Enterprise Financial Management Association have jointly launched the ESG Analyst joint certification program.
Professional ESG analysis talent will help enterprises practice ESG more effectively and efficiently, achieving genuine sustainable development. As a currently sought-after career, ESG has seen its job demand grow year by year, with salaries generally remaining at a high level.
