The 2016 Grouphorse Global Interpreting Summit opened on June 4 at Four Points by Sheraton Shanghai, Pudong.

Themed “The way forward: new vitality in the new normal”, the summit aimed to facilitate exchanges and improving the ecosystem in the industry. It featured translation and interpreting masters from the UN, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Translators Association of China (TAC), International Association of Conference Interpreters (AIIC), Shanghai Foreign Affairs Office, top-notch universities in China including Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU) and Fudan University, and more than 200 translation and interpreting learners.

Discussions themed “Market-oriented interpreting training” and “A better education plan for Master of Translation and Interpreting candidates” were held where experts from universities, government departments and international organizations brainstormed and shared their insights and experience with the audience.

In addition, Shanghai International Studies University signed an agreement with Grouphorse at the summit to establish a joint center for career education and development, which will center on nurturing top-notch, practice-oriented translators and interpreters.

The summit brought together professionals who looked into the future of the industry. The event was covered by many mainstream media outlets, like the Dragon TV.

Some of the distinguished guests included Grouphorse Senior Advisor Ms. Xu Ya’nan, former director-general of the Department of Translation and Interpretation at Ministry of Foreign Affairs, former chief of the Chinese Translation Service of the Documentation Division of the Department for General Assembly and Conference Management (DGACM) at the United Nations, a council member of UN Association of China and a member of the International Federation of Translators, and Ms. Dong Heli, director of the Department of Translation and Interpretation at Shanghai Foreign Affairs Office and an AIIC member, Mr. Tang Xing, chairman of Grouphorse, a council member of the TAC and a formal representative at the Boao Forum for Asia, Mr. Wang Hongzhang, director of the Department of Translation and Interpretation at Fudan University, Mr. Yao Bin, vice dean of the Graduate School of Translation and Interpreting at Beijing Foreign Studies University, Mr. Tao Qing, doctoral supervisor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Mr. Zhao Gang, director of the Department of Translation at East China Normal University, Mr. Cao Jianxin, professor at Nanjing University and an exclusive trainer at Grouphorse, Mr. Sun Jian, Party branch secretary of the School of English Studies at Shanghai International Studies University (SISU), Ms. Cao Yuan, deputy Party branch secretary of the School of English Studies at SISU, Ms. Guo Liangliang, postgraduate supervisor at Tongji University, Dr. Wang Yanqiang, a visiting scholar at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey, and Ms. Zhang Li, general manager of Shanghai Grouphorse Translations Company.

The summit was hosted by Zhou Jingqi, senior simultaneous interpreter and exclusive trainer at Grouphorse. It was interpreted by interpreters from Cema Translators Training Institute (Cema), Grouphorse’s flagship brand.
